An epic adventure to remember
It has a single cylinder engine and goes a top speed of 80kmh, but a former Blenheim woman is hoping her rickety rickshaw can take her safely across India.
Denelle MacDonald, 24, has joined forces with two team-mates to travel across India in a ‘‘glorified lawnmower’’ called Fatima.
The intrepid explorers hope to complete the 3500km Rickshaw Run to raise money for the Cancer Society Marlborough, while avoiding the country’s 45 million cows and 30,000 elephants.
Whitehaven Wines, in Marlborough, is sponsoring the team who began their epic adventure last week.
Run by an organisation called The Adventurists, the annual race requires participants to travel from Kochin in South India to Jaisalmer in the north on a 2-stroke, seven horse power rickshaw.
Dani, 24, who is based in Dubai after a stint in London, says the
‘‘ ... this is surely going to be one hell of an adventure and it's all for a good cause. ’’
idea was to have an adventure while raising money for charity.
‘‘There will be plenty of challenges heading our way and we have no doubt we will be curs- ing ourselves for coming up with this crazy idea in the first place but this is surely going to be one hell of an adventure and it’s all for a good cause,’’ she says.
The Rickshaw Run, in its 11th year, attracts people from the across the globe. There is no set route, no back-up and no support, just a starting line and finishing line. The rickshaws are renowned for breaking down.
Dani says she is not sure how useful she will be but is prepared to give it her best shot.
‘‘I like clean toilets, getting my nails done and an occasional nice glass of wine.
‘‘I don’t like spicy food or pretty much anything that we will eat on this trip and I’ve no experience of roughing it. My geographical knowledge is limited as I thought Qatar was in Africa.’’
The team is also supporting environmental charity, Cool Earth. All entrants must get to Jaisalmer by August 27.
