Fundraising takes sweet turn

Marlborough Midweek - - OUT & ABOUT - PAULA HULBURT

The humble strawberry is helping raise money for breast cancer survivors.

A Marlborough chef has created a designer dessert to help give a charity a boost in funds.

Titled Courageous Blossoms, the unique confectionary has been fashioned especially to help members of Marlborough’s breast cancer dragon boat team, Simply the Breast.

Chef Bradley Hornby at awardwinning Arbour restaurant near Renwick came up with the concoction.

For every one of the desserts sold, owners Brad Hornby and Liz Buttimore will donate $5 to the boat team.

Liz says the restaurant is proud to support local charities.

‘‘I need a way to feel we are making a difference, that I am not taking my happy, Kiwi life for granted when so many in the world struggle to live.

‘‘People from within the community support our business and it is important that we put money back into it... with a focus on our vulnerable population.

‘‘Our dream has been to have a beautiful restaurant that competes nationally and gives locally and Arbour has given us that vehicle.

‘‘The support we get with our charity events is wonderful, so many people help us out,’’ she says.

Simply The Breast is an incorporated society whose primary aim is to assist with the rehabilitation of breast cancer survivors.

Co-chair Susie Williams was just 40-years-old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She says the support of the community is vital. Hans Herzog and The Lemongrass restaurants will also be hosting a Dragon Table during October which diners can book to also help raise funds.

‘‘This kind of support is huge and it warms your heart when businesses and individuals support such a cause.

‘‘The Dragon Boat consists of 22 women, and we are the only South Island team that has to travel to all our regattas which makes it pretty expensive for our individual team members,’’ she says.

The club will be holding an open day to allow people to try their hand at dragon-boating on October 1 and 15.

The idea is supported by family owned and operated Hedgerows Hydroponic Ltd on Old Renwick Rd in Blenheim and lettuce and fresh herb growers Thymebank on Hammerichs Rd near Rapaura.
