Dresses to make dreams come true
A modern-day fairy godmother is helping dreams come true this dance season.
Blenheim-based beautician Jennifer Simpson is donating two full length ball gowns to girls who may not be able to go to the ball otherwise.
She has launched a search to find two worthy recipients and hopes people will nominate deserving students.
Simpson says she wore the dresses, worth about $300 in total, for her own school formal in 2014 and to a dance at the end of her first year in tertiary education.
‘‘They are special dresses and deserve more than just sitting in my wardrobe not seeing the light of the day,
‘‘I did think of selling them on but then I thought it’d be better to give the dresses away to someone who really needs them - someone who might not be able to go to their formal otherwise,’’ she says.
The school formal is the highlight of the social calendar but with gowns costing an average of around $150 it can also be the most expensive.
Best suited to a size 8, though one can be adjusted, the dresses both feature intricate beading and are made from chiffon.
Simpson wore the champagne coloured dress to her formal.
‘‘The formal was a really big deal for me when I was at school and I hope to find someone who may not be able to buy a dress who wants to go to theirs.
‘‘I just really like the idea that someone else can enjoy wearing them too,’’ she says.
The former Marlborough Girls’ College student went on to study beauty therapy at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s Blenheim campus.
She says while both dresses hold special memories for her, she has no qualms about gifting them on.
‘‘I hope when it comes to it that I will be able to hand them over,’’ she jokes.

Both Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges hold a combined formal every year and in 2016 Marlborough Girls’ College launched an initiative for girls to borrow a donated gown.
This year’s formal is scheduled to take place in September.
