Hats off to family fundraisers
Volunteers at a parenting centre hope a cute winter hat fundraiser will help get them ahead with their finances.
Marlborough Parents Centre are selling hand-made hats to help fund their parenting and information classes.
Parents at the voluntary organisation hope the $20 winter woollies will prove to be a hot seller as temperatures start to dip.
President of the Blenheimbased centre Rebecca Toms says each of the animal-inspired hats will be made to order.
People can chose from seven designs including monsters, Minions, ladybirds and monkeys.
While members are charged a fee to join, the centre relies on fundraising to ensure it can continue to offer a range of services to parents and families across Marlborough.
One of the newest courses on offer is a return to work class.
Toms, who is soon to stand down as president, says she first became involved with the centre shortly after the birth of her first child.
‘‘I did all the antenatal classes and follow-up ones but at the end I knew I wanted to meet people and have some form of adult conversation.
‘‘It was a great way to get out,’’ she says.
Marlborough Parents Centre has been providing parenting services for more than 30 years. It offers information on childbirth, parent education and support as well as advocacy for parents, families and birthing.
The non-profit group is run by a dedicated crew of volunteers and Toms says the centre welcomes new members.
‘‘It’s been about giving back for me but now my oldest is about to start school, it’s time to step down.
‘‘Like many other groups we are short of committee members but if that sounds too daunting we have a Friends of the Committee group too who help out on a more casual basis,’’ she says.
The group will be holding a committee meeting at 6.30pm on August 10 at 10 Alana Place. Potential members are encouraged to attend to find out more about what the centre can offer.
To order a hat or to find out more about the centre visit the Marlborough Parents Centre page on Facebook. Orders are open until May 28.
