Head steward Nicola McBurney estimates she had two hours and 30 minutes sleep the night before the Matamata Rose Show.

She arrived at the Memorial Centre to open up at 5.30am and only just beat two exhibitors.

Her day was spent ‘‘trying to be at 600 places at once’’ directing 12 Matamata Rose Show volunteers, helping first-time exhibitors set up, checking entries and numbers and resolving issues but she still had time to be impressed by the standard of entries this year.

‘‘There were some really good entries, some good quality blooms.’’
