Matamata Chronicle - - Sport - By NICKI DAVIDSON

Some walked, some drove and others arrived by helicopter – proving that a gloomy morning couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits at Sunday’s IHC Charity Golf Tournament held at the Mata- mata Golf Club.

IHC Waikato South chairwoman Christine Lee said the community support was invaluable, especially from the Matamata Lions Club which had not only been organising the tournament for more than 40 years but had volunteered at it too.

‘‘ This is one of the major fundraisers for Matamata IHC and the Matamata Lions are really generous.

‘‘ We couldn’t do it without the support of our community,’’ Mrs Lee said.

Once a

tally from donations, sponsorship and raffles is known, the money will go towards Idea Services which runs a computer technology centre in town offering specialised learning equipment for people with disabilities.

The centre has 32 students from around the Waikato, offering one on one lessons and modules to complete.

‘‘We’d like to get even more specialised equipment to meet individual needs, more touch screens, more cameras and more programmes to teach adult literacy, numeracy and social skills because they are adults not children,’’ she said.

‘‘We have a state of the art computer centre in Matamata and we are the envy of other places.’’
