January 29 was the first round of the summer cup and the weather bomb that had rushed through earlier meant some amazing new water features needed negotiating on what was otherwise a fine day for golf. Leading the charge and picking up the Robert Harris voucher for golfer of the week plus 4 balls was Paul Wood with a 67 off the stick, net 66. Three balls each for the net 67s of Alex Johnson and Jim Barr, whilst Bruce Hancock’s 69 earned him two balls. Lyall Wilson and Jack Trower showed they can still produce a solid 70 picking up a ball each and Murray Eddington was the only honest golfer on the day carding a net 71 and claiming a ball. A ball each for the twos from Paul Wood (on the par four 8th), Alex Johnson and Malcolm Johnson.
The first Challenge Card Voucher for the year went to Jim Barr for an exceptional birdie on the newly water-featured 13th hole, while Murray Eddington picked up the Sen Sushi voucher finishing closest for two on the 18th. The final ball of the day went to John Trower who sensed his chance to claim whacker of the week and grabbed it with both hands.
This Saturday is the Waitangi weekend scramble from 8.30am. Members look forward to a fun stableford day of good golf. draw; this meant that the division ran in a round robin order. The club won all three of its games over Saturday and Sunday. The Putaruru-Tirau B and C grade teams won both their finals convincingly.
The weekend ran very smoothly due to efficiency of the teams and the organisation of all the helpers, scorekeepers and umpires.
Putaruru-Tirau will host the sponsors carnival at Tokoroa Memorial Sportgrounds on March 12-13 this year. This is a very important carnival for the polocrosse season.
So if you didn’t have the chance to get down and see what polocrosse is all about this will be a great opportunity for the community.
