Top Kiwi swim­mers among reps to com­pete

Mata­mata res­i­dents will have the op­por­tu­nity to see some of New Zealand’s best swim­mers in ac­tion when Mata­mata Swim­ming Club hosts a spon­sored meet on Satur­day.

Club coach Graeme Laing said com­peti­tors would in­clude Com­mon­wealth Games and Olympic swim­mers.

North Shore club, which is one of the biggest in New Zealand, is bring­ing 47 swim­mers.

The Swim NZ High Per­for­mance squad, also based at North Shore which in­cludes Mata­mata swim­mer Matt Stan­ley, will also be at­tend­ing.

‘‘It’s great be­cause the wee kids will get to see the New Zealand reps rac­ing,’’ Mr Laing said.

‘‘It’s a pretty re­laxed day

for them, it’s not of­ten they get to go to the smaller places so it’s a fun day, plus they will sign au­to­graphs and so on.’’

The meet cov­ers all lev­els from be­gin­ner to elite and 39 swim­mers from Mata­mata will be tak­ing part.

Sk­inz races are the fastest eight qual­i­fiers for the 50m freestyle event for both men and women.

A Sk­inz race will also be held for un­der 12s this year with cash prizes for first, sec­ond and third.

Or­gan­iser Lynette Smith said the club was very grate­ful to Mata­mata busi­nesses $3600 worth of prizes.

‘‘ Last year we had lots of swim­mers. Peo­ple came from all over the North Is­land to com­pete. Spec­ta­tors are more than wel­come.’’

The meet warm up starts at 8.30am, with the of­fi­cial pro­gramme get­ting un­der way at 9.30am at Mata­mata Sports Cen­tre.
