Top Kiwi swimmers among reps to compete
Matamata residents will have the opportunity to see some of New Zealand’s best swimmers in action when Matamata Swimming Club hosts a sponsored meet on Saturday.
Club coach Graeme Laing said competitors would include Commonwealth Games and Olympic swimmers.
North Shore club, which is one of the biggest in New Zealand, is bringing 47 swimmers.
The Swim NZ High Performance squad, also based at North Shore which includes Matamata swimmer Matt Stanley, will also be attending.
‘‘It’s great because the wee kids will get to see the New Zealand reps racing,’’ Mr Laing said.
‘‘It’s a pretty relaxed day
for them, it’s not often they get to go to the smaller places so it’s a fun day, plus they will sign autographs and so on.’’
The meet covers all levels from beginner to elite and 39 swimmers from Matamata will be taking part.
Skinz races are the fastest eight qualifiers for the 50m freestyle event for both men and women.
A Skinz race will also be held for under 12s this year with cash prizes for first, second and third.
Organiser Lynette Smith said the club was very grateful to Matamata businesses $3600 worth of prizes.
‘‘ Last year we had lots of swimmers. People came from all over the North Island to compete. Spectators are more than welcome.’’
The meet warm up starts at 8.30am, with the official programme getting under way at 9.30am at Matamata Sports Centre.
