Opportunity for future leaders

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By NICKI DAVIDSON

Calling all future leaders – if you would like to attend a challenging and exciting personal development programme, applications are open for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

Applicants must have left school and be aged between 18 and 25. Matamata Rotary youth spokesperson Glenda Milligan said they were looking for someone with strong leadership aspirations.

‘‘We want someone who stands out, someone with a desire to make a difference. It’s an opportunity for them to grow in themselves, to take up a leadership role amongst their peers and engage with community leaders,’’ Mrs Milligan said.

The week-long programme includes outdoor activities, confidence building and problem solving, leadership training, communication skills, public speaking, personal awareness and team building.

Tamaki Wilson, who attended in 2009, said it was invaluable. ‘‘Epworth Camp is an awesome spot, learning about what a leader is and how to help yourself and others. It takes you out of your comfort zone, we did charades to introduce ourselves and I had to be a tumble drier!’’

The 22-year-old, who works at Matamata Mitre 10, said the programme helped him progress at his job.

‘‘It really helped, I felt more confident with customers and relating to different people. It gave me a boost to do more in store and I ended up winning the Mitre 10 regional award for young retailer of the year in 2010,’’ he said.

Applications close February 21 and the programme will take place from April 16 to 21 at Epworth Camp, Lake Karapiro. For more information contact Glenda on 888 8307.
