First entrant

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By KATRINA LINTONBON

Dawson Bruce is 85 years old, his hip gives him a bit trouble and he is almost totally blind.

But this selfless man, who has been told by his doctor that he is as fit and healthy as a man half his age, was so moved by the devastating Christchurch Earthquake he is entering the Matamata Chronicle Tower Run in the hope that individuals and Matamata businesses will sponsor him.

With tears running down his face Mr Bruce makes one request.

‘‘I’m doing this for the people of Christchurch. Please, please support me.’’

Walking for Christchurch is the name Mr Bruce has given to his campaign.

Mr Bruce will put the first $1000 towards the Walking for Christchurch fund.

If you want to support Mr Bruce please go to the Matamata branch of the National bank and make an anonymous donation.

Fighting spirit: Dawson Bruce with his homemade boxing bag. Mr Bruce has been sparring every day and he believes that’s the reason why he is fit and healthy enough to participate in the Matamata Chronicle Tower Run to raise money for the people of Christchurch.
