Cup a possibility
Matamata teenager Oliver Wright could be winging his way to Fukuoka, Japan next month pending squad selection for the for the Sanix Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament.
New Zealand Football has accepted an invitation to the tournament and two games in ASPIRE Academy in Doha, Qatar, as preparation for the FIFA U17 World Cup which is being held in Mexico in June.
As a member of the extended New Zealand Football U17 Squad, Wright could be selected to play in this international fixture.
The selected 21 players will assemble in Auckland on Tuesday, March 15 prior to departure to Japan.
The Sanix Cup tournament runs from March 18 to 22.
The squad will then travel direct from Fukuoka to Doha to play two matches on March 27 and 30.
A big athletic centre back, Wright has made his way through the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football development programmes and has been playing football for Hamilton Boys’ High School. This year he has moved to Auckland for his year 13 education at Sacred Heart College, where he will be coached by former All White Danny Hay.
