Sausages fuel an unstinting public
The barbecue barely had time to heat up as lunchtime generosity from Matamata raised more than $31,000 for Christchurch earthquake victims.
During their Friday two-hour lunch break last week, ASB Matamata staff were amazed at the kindness generated by their sausage sizzle and canvassing.
ASB Matamata rural manager Jan Pattinson said she had never seen sausages go so fast.
Mrs Pattinson, whose husband’s family was visiting a relative in Rangiora at the time of the quake, said ‘‘up here’’ the ASB team had felt quite helpless. ‘‘It was just nice to do something,’’ she said.
Branch manager Jan Chinn said the ASB Central North Island’s 15 branches as well as rural and business banking teams decided to host barbecues in their towns to add to the $1 million already donated by ASB.
Matamata businesses also helped with the barbecue.
Clothing stores Jaggers and Caroline Eve lent mannequins, which in turn were dressed by Matamata Sports World and Stirling Sports in Cantabrian rugby jerseys and caps.
New World and Export Meat Warehouse provided the food.
If anyone wishes to donate to the ASB Christchurch Appeal they can do so at any branch or online – the account number is 12 3205 0146808 00.
