Vac­ci­na­tion rate at record high

Plun­ket has wel­comed the news that New Zealand’s child­hood im­mu­ni­sa­tion rate is now at a record high.

‘‘Par­tic­u­larly pleas­ing to see is the 14 per cent in­crease in the im­mu­ni­sa­tion rate among the Maori and Pa­cific com­mu­ni­ties,’’ said Plun­ket clin­i­cal ad­viser Al­li­son Jamieson. ‘‘Vac­ci­na­tion is the most ef­fec­tive way to pro­tect chil­dren from the many child­hood dis­eases that af­fect fam­i­lies to­day.’’

Ms Jamieson said these dis­eases could have se­ri­ous com­pli­ca­tions and were of­ten spread by fam­ily mem­bers or friends.

‘‘ Im­mu­ni­sa­tion is a free, proven way that par­ents can pro­tect their chil­dren against 11 se­ri­ous dis­eases, in­clud­ing measles, mumps and rubella. It is never too late to catch up,
