The hum­ble car key is un­der­go­ing a re­nais­sance. No longer the lump of hard plas­tic with a fixed metal spike at one end, the mod­ern, aes­thet­i­cally pleas­ing ‘‘smart’’ key fits eas­ily in your pocket and can even al­low you to open doors and start the en­gine by re­mote con­trol – but only if the key is within range of sen­sors around the ve­hi­cle.
