New mum finishes ocean challenge

Matamata Chronicle - - Sport - By LAURA McLEAY

When Emma Lissington had a baby girl just eight months ago, she knew getting back into exercise would prove a challenge.

But she set herself a goal and in March she routinely headed to the swimming pools.

Less than a month after getting back in the water she completed that challenge.

She swam the Sand to Surf ocean swim at Mt Maunganui on March 26. This is part of the State Ocean Swim Series that happens around New Zealand annually.

Participants can enter into different categories depending on their preferred dis- tance. Mrs Lissington swam 300m, which she said may not sound like a long way but it was a challenge for the new mother.

She braved the pouring rain and choppy seas and came in first for her age group 30-39 year olds.

‘‘ It was quite satisfying to feel that adrenaline. It was a big self achievement,’’ she said.

‘‘I enjoy swimming, something I used to do a lot of when I was a child. I had a baby eight months ago so I needed to get into shape and this has given me the drive to get swimming again.’’

This was her first time doing an ocean swim and she said now that she has had a taste, she was keen to work towards the one kilometre swim in next year’s Sand to Surf competition.

‘‘You need a bit of a challenge to keep yourself going and have something to aim for,’’ she said.
