Matamata Chronicle - - News - By DAVID HULME

New Matamata Rotary president Eric Muckle is looking forward to 12 months at the helm of the service club, aiming for a fun and fulfilling year for members.

The Waharoa dairy farmer is the 65th president of the Rotary Club of Matamata, following the club’s annual change of officers’ dinner held at the UMS clubrooms.

‘‘ Rotary is about networking, connecting, and the sharing of ideas and building relationships locally, nationally and internationally,’’ Mr Muckle told members at his rugby world cupthemed change-over dinner.

‘‘As a club, we have several fundraising efforts throughout the year so in one way or another all members are involved. These are our community focus,’’ Mr Muckle said.

It was important to put Rotary’s motto of ‘‘service above self’’ to the forefront in order to achieve the best in the coming year, he said.

The organisation’s world president, Kalyan Banerjee from India, has themed the year ‘‘Reach within to Embrace Humanity’’ and Mr Muckle said no matter which way you chose to look at the year’s theme it was about people.

‘‘ At times I feel a little overwhelmed by the task ahead but I know I am surrounded by many experienced and supportive Rotarians,’’ he said. ‘‘It is therefore first and foremost my intention for this year to be enjoyable, fulfilling and a fun year for all members.’’

Outgoing president David Wheadon said he was thrilled with what had been achieved by the club in the past 12 months.

‘‘The phrase ‘in my year’ is often mentioned in Rotary but this last year has been a real team effort,’’ Mr Wheadon said.

‘‘In our community much has been achieved in the past year. All presidents and their teams have a template to enrich Rotary and all that is associated with Rotary in their own special way.’’

Mr Wheadon said activities with youth, the council and Matamata College had been some of the highlights for the club in the previous 12 months.

The club had undertaken a large number of projects within the community, he said.

Change over: Waharoa dairy farmer Eric Muckle is the 65th president of the Rotary Club of Matamata.
