Matamata Chronicle - - News - By KATRINA LINTONBON

Mother Nature unleashed her wrath on Matamata for the majority of last week causing a power cut, chaos on roads and extensive flooding.

For the first time in the history of the Matamata Dramatic Society, the play Take a Chance on Me had to be rescheduled to the next day after a power cut half way through the performance about 8.30pm on July 9.

Transpower communications manager Adele Fitzpatrick said wild weather around the country was the cause of the power cut.

‘‘ We had a few lines down around the country,’’ she said.

The power cut also caused damage to computers at various business premises and a number of phone lines were down for a few days afterward.

Saturday morning sports had to be called off after fields were pounded by heavy rain causing them to turn to pits of mud.

Rainfall of 110mm was recorded in Matamata making it one of the highest in the Waikato Region.

Warnings about rising river levels were also issued by Waikato Regional Council.
