Games on as lights go up

Matamata Chronicle - - Opinion/news - By LAURA MCLEAY

Soccer players at Pohlen Park had no choice but to play in the dark after the majority of the field lights broke and Matamata-Piako District Council failed to fix them, said Matamata Soccer Club committee member Malcolm Raynel.

The park, owned and maintained by the council, now has a new set of lights after the community stepped in. Matamata Soccer Club secured a grant of $6000 from the New Zealand Community Trust for replacement lights.

Mr Raynel said he was thrilled that other businesses also came on board to help out with the remaining costs.

‘‘Electrico and MTG Hire Centre funded the rest of the lights and donated their time,’’ he said.

Bright lights: Electrico electricians put up the new lights at Pohlen Park.
