Two wins for young farmer
Awards have been flowing in for contract milker Hugh Edward. Mr Edward scooped two awards last month at the annual Agriculture Industry Training Organisation AgriAwards in Hamilton – the Don Thompson Cup and the Harrison Shield.
‘‘The best part for me is a lot of the names on the trophies are guys who are pretty high up in the Young Farmers right now.
‘‘They’re doing well in the industry so I just need to follow them,’’ he said.
The Don Thompson Cup was awarded for outstanding practical performance on the farm and comes with $200 worth of farming vouchers.
He received the Harrison Shield for outstanding ability and quality of leadership, academic ability and practical farming skills.
The award came with $500 cash and a week-long exchange in the South Island.
Last month, Mr Edward finished two years of practical onfarm training with the training organisation, learning the fundamentals of the job.
On top of everything else, he is also chairman of the Piarere Young Farmers’ Club, and said the club was looking for new members.
‘‘It’s a good social club and just really fun to be involved in. Everyone’s really friendly there and we always like to see new faces.’’
He stressed that the club was not only for farmers – anyone was welcome.
‘‘It’s for anyone with what we call a rural interest. We’ve got builders, teachers and everything in between. We never turn anyone away.’’
The Piarere Young Farmers’ Club meets every Monday night at the Te Poi Country Pub at 8pm, as well as taking part in various other events throughout the year.
These include inter-club challenges like tug-of-war and bowling, field trips to rugby games, or weekend-long bus tours to a mystery destination.
Anyone interested in joining the Piarere club can contact Hugh Edward on 027 259 1649, or check out the Facebook page for more details.
