Rugby fever sweeps through town

With the Rugby World Cup in full swing Mata­mata has seen teams and sup­port­ers both stop off for a visit on their way through to games. The Spring­boks, a Cana­dian rugby club and Aus­tralian and Welsh fans have been spot­ted around town. Mata­mata Col­lege is also show­ing its sup­port and ral­ly­ing to bring back their former stu­dent Brendon Leonard af­ter he dropped out of the All Blacks last year due to in­jury. Lo­cals have en­joyed meet­ing the passers-by, tak­ing pho­tos and get­ting sig­na­tures from the Spring­bok play­ers.

Cana­dian visit: Port Alberni Black Sheep Rugby Club stop off in Mata­mata last Thurs­day for a bit of sight­see­ing. Twenty-eight keen rugby play­ers from Canada are fol­low­ing their team around New Zealand for the World Cup.
