Everyone’s a winner in silage competition
The winners of the MatamataPiako District Council Silage Wrap Competition have been announced and two Matamata schools have taken top honours.
First prize went to ElstowWaihou Combined School. They will receive $1500 and a voucher for $1500 worth of Eco-Fertiliser which the school can raffle. Hinuera School took second place and will receive $1000 and a voucher for $1000 worth of Eco-Fertiliser.
Firth Primary School came third equal with Manawaru School and the prize of $500 and a $500 voucher worth of EcoFertiliser will be split.
The aim of the competition was to promote the recycling of silage wrap as an alternative to burning and burying by encouraging farmers to choose their local school they wish to support.
Schools registered with the council if they wanted to participate and received a cash donation for doing so. Farmers then chose which school they wanted to support when they bought recycling bags.
While the competition was of great benefit to the schools, the farmers had an incentive to recycle – the council hopes recycling will become part of their farming practices – benefiting the environment and helping to minimise waste in the district. The competition ran from February to August. Around 20 schools registered and about 50 farmers signed up.
