About 300 people gathered at the Matamata Memorial Centre for the 2011 Matamata-Piako District Council Business to Business Awards.

Mayor Hugh Vercoe said it was the ideal time to recognise business success in the district.

The Boltholder is regarded as a successful business and director Peter Thissen had the crowd laughing while sharing his story of how the Boltholder was transformed into the thriving business it is now.

‘‘Passion, commitment, quality, opportunities, stock control, no impulse buying, watching personal spending, good marketing, sticking to what you know and above all else mag wheels – I love mag wheels. These are words I use to describe how a business becomes a success,’’ he said.

Guest speaker Sir Ray Avery spoke of overcoming huge odds to become one of the world’s leading scientists and educators.

He had a simple message – observation is the key to innovation.

Continued on page 3 photos of award winners.
