Mayor at opening of upgraded BMX track
The long awaited Matamata BMX track grand opening is set to be held at Burwood Rd this Sunday from 1pm.
The track, which has been upgraded to better suit the needs of the youth in Matamata is finally finished and is ready to be used by the community. Matamata-Piako district mayor Hugh Vercoe will be doing the official opening followed by a performance from international BMX riders from Cambridge.
Matamata-Piako District councillor and BMX Club president Bob McGrail said he welcomed everyone to come along for the afternoon as there would be a lot of great entertainment.
‘‘Bring your bikes along as well and we will be letting the different age groups do circuits – and there are heaps of great prizes for everyone,’’ he said.
‘‘This is a track that has been built by the community, for the community so everyone can come and use it.’’
Mr McGrail said this new track was significant for the youth of Matamata.
‘‘I honestly believe we have to think about how we entertain our youth, and we want to see and encourage the skills of our young people,’’ he said.
‘‘There isn’t much else for youths to do apart from the skate park in town and I think it is great for the youth to have something else that is their own.’’
Prizes and giveaways up for grabs include a new BMX bike that anyone can win by registering in the draw on the day.
The opening is set to go until about 4pm and there will be food and drinks available to buy.
Bigger and better: The upgraded BMX track which officially opens this Sunday, has proved a highlight for many over the school holidays.
