Even though Charlie Errol Ward was not the Christmas day baby he was meant to be, his parents Sharon and Glenn Ward said being the first 2012 Matamata baby was just as special.

‘‘It was a great way to start the year and it is very special that he was the first baby here in the new year,’’ Mrs Ward said.

Charlie was born at Pohlen Hospital at 3.20am on January 2, weighing 3356 grams (7.4 pounds).

January 2 is also Mrs Ward’s late grandfather’s birthday which made it an extra special family occasion.

Charlie is brother to James, 2, who is thrilled to have a new playmate besides dogs Sam and Badger.

‘‘I’m looking forward to having us all together and getting to know Charlie properly and James is looking forward to having someone to play with,’’ Mrs Ward said.

‘‘It is a special time. Charlie has already proven to have a strong character so it will be good.’’

Hello 2012: Charlie Errol Ward was the first baby born in Matamata this year.
