The time has come for local bowlers to refine their techniques and start getting ready for the Combined District Women’s Bowling Tournament that begins next week.

Organisers of the annual event, from January 24 till 26, which sees bowlers from around the North Island compete for ‘‘rather good prize money’’, have been preparing for the past year. The event, thoroughly enjoyed by all participants is about more than just the prize though. It is a time to get together, meet new people and spend time playing the sport so many have grown to love.

Bowler and committee member Dorothy Dawson said it was always a great week for all involved.

Starting on Tuesday, January 24, with an opening ceremony at the Matamata Bowling Club, the tournament will stretch out until Thursday when the finals will be held.

‘‘We are using Matamata, Rewa and Hinuera bowling clubs each day from 9am to play on and all visitors are most welcome to come and watch us,’’ Mrs Dawson said. Last year 44 teams came to play, making the tournament a huge success. ‘‘It is very well supported by the locals which is great, so we will be having raffles on finals day and an afternoon for everyone to share,’’ she said.
