US move proves suc­cess­ful

Kelsie Wills has made a name for her­self in New Zealand vol­ley­ball cir­cles and now she is do­ing the same in the United States.

The 19 year old has com­pleted the first six months of a four- year in­door vol­ley­ball schol­ar­ship at Hof­s­tra Univer­sity in Long Is­land, New York and was back in Mata­mata for her hol­i­day break when the Chron­i­cle caught up with her.

Wills has been play­ing vol­ley­ball since she started high school at Mata­mata Col­lege and by 2010 she Jer­sey In­sti­tute Septem­ber 22.

Wills said since start­ing the schol­ar­ship her vol­ley­ball skills had im­proved a lot af­ter step­ping up her fit­ness and train­ing. ‘‘It is re­ally com­pet­i­tive over there and we have coach­ing ev­ery day with a lot of fit­ness, so it keeps you go­ing,’’ she said. ‘‘But I love it over there. New York City is very ex­cit­ing.’’
