Lions convention, Hollywood style
You would have been forgiven for thinking the Academy Awards ceremony was occurring at the Memorial Centre last weekend.
The Lions Clubs International District 202L Convention 2012 was held in Matamata from Friday February 10 until Sunday February 12.
The theme set for the convention was Movie Magic following on from some of the location filming of The Hobbit being in Matamata.
Convention chairman Richard Norris said 315 registrations were received and there wasn’t a motel in Matamata that wasn’t booked out.
Lions members from all over the country came to the convention with international director Eddy Widjanarko from Indonesia also making the trip. The last convention was held in Matamata in 1984 when Don Locke was president.
It is the third convention to be held in Matamata.
A cheque for $200,000 was also handed over to the Cancer Society at the convention.
