Lions con­ven­tion, Hol­ly­wood style

You would have been for­given for think­ing the Academy Awards cer­e­mony was oc­cur­ring at the Me­mo­rial Cen­tre last week­end.

The Lions Clubs In­ter­na­tional Dis­trict 202L Con­ven­tion 2012 was held in Mata­mata from Fri­day Fe­bru­ary 10 un­til Sun­day Fe­bru­ary 12.

The theme set for the con­ven­tion was Movie Magic fol­low­ing on from some of the lo­ca­tion film­ing of The Hob­bit be­ing in Mata­mata.

Con­ven­tion chair­man Richard Nor­ris said 315 reg­is­tra­tions were re­ceived and there wasn’t a mo­tel in Mata­mata that wasn’t booked out.

Lions mem­bers from all over the coun­try came to the con­ven­tion with in­ter­na­tional di­rec­tor Eddy Wid­ja­narko from In­done­sia also mak­ing the trip. The last con­ven­tion was held in Mata­mata in 1984 when Don Locke was pres­i­dent.

It is the third con­ven­tion to be held in Mata­mata.

A cheque for $200,000 was also handed over to the Can­cer So­ci­ety at the con­ven­tion.
