For those who struggle to put food on the table especially at a time like Christmas, a parcel of goodies goes a long way in improving spirits.

Tirau Lions has been donating food to the Tirau Cooperating Parish for the past three years.

Tirau Lions president Mark Sutherland said they liked to do their bit in the community and thought this was one way to help. ‘‘We have monthly meetings and encourage our members to bring an item of food to put aside,’’ he said.

Tirau Co-operating Parish office manager Fiona Van Lent said they were not what you would deem a normal food bank but they loved to help out those in need, or who had lost a loved one or just had a rough time.

The reactions from those who received the parcels were heartwarming, Mrs Van Lent said.

‘‘We have had people stand- ing there with tears streaming down their faces who are just so overwhelmed by the gesture,’’ she said.

Last year, just before Christmas, 17 parcels were distributed in the Tirau area.
