Pedallers, not putters
Four hundred and eighty cyclists and 110 support staff set up their tents on the Okoroire golf course and stayed overnight as part of the Great Escapade New Zealand 2012.
Event manager Michael Russell said the average age of participants is 49 and it is not considered a cycle race.
‘‘We put on events like this in Victoria like the Great Victoria Bike Ride. We thought we would do something different,’’ Mr Russell said.
People came from Australia and New Zealand to take part.
The event started in Gisborne on February 18 and will conclude in Taupo. The last time the Great Escapade took place in New Zealand was in the South Island in 2004.
Tent city: The Okoroire golf course was transformed into a campground last Friday night.
