Stone carving all set to take centre stage
It’s been a busy week at the Matamata Sculpture Symposium as skilled sculptors take to stone to create a work of art. The symposium is in its 23rd year and is held at Railside by the Green on Hetana St. It runs until Saturday, March 17 when all the pieces created will be up for sale from 11am.
On Friday, March 16 there will be a public viewing from 5pm.
People are welcome to head along and watch in the finals days as the stones take shape. Sculptors including Trish Looney (pictured above) and Dan Mills (pictured left) have two weeks to work on a piece of Hinuera stone which can be up to one tonne in mass.
This year organisers are again inviting viewers to vote for their favourite sculpture and sculptor on site. The winner of the people’s choice award will be announced on the auction day.
So head along to check out the sculptures and support our local sculptors.
