Hinuera wicket-takers triumphant
Failing to defend 305 against Cambridge at the square last weekend, many would have suspected the chances of Reid & Harrison Hinuera A cricket team defending a much smaller total against the mighty Morrinsville batting line-up in the 100 overs Waikato Valley Senior A Champions Trophy.
After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Hinuera openers made a slow but cautious start.
Three quick wickets between the
sixth and 13th over pushed back the batting initiative and the Hinuera score tottered to 31-3.
Andrew Tiddy in the 16th over and the opener Suhas Shanbhogue (13) in the 21st over followed suit trying to clear the inner circle – 54-5 in the 21st over. Richard Oshaughnessy(16), Jason Rusk ( 17), Daniel Spencer (20*) all formed useful partnerships with Phil Taylor ( 50) to bring some respectability to Hinuera’s total which concluded for 162 in the 40th over.
Taylor played a delightful innings with three massive sixes and five hits to the boundary.
Morrinsville laughed its way to lunch, expecting to chase down 162 runs in 60 overs easily . Tiddy and Rusk had other ideas. What transpired was some terrific, aggressive fast bowling.
Rusk drew first blood in the second over when he sent the off stick of Tom Arnold for a walk with a peach of a delivery – Morrinsville 2-1. He came back once again for his second over and disturbed the woodwork.
Not to be left far behind, Tiddy struck the woodwork twice in his next over – score 16-4 in five overs. He got the next wicket as well in his fourth over, caught behind.
With only two wickets left Rusk cleaned one with a well-disguised slower delivery in his fourth over and then came back to break the stumps of the last batsmen with a ripping yorker.
Demolition of Morrinsville had been completed in the 10th over for a meagre 30 runs.
This builds up beautifully for the final clash of the top two teams in the championship next weekend at Otorohanga.
Once the results of this week are in, depending on how the teams have fared, this might be the final that decides the championship.
For their valuable contributions, Phil Taylor, Andrew Tiddy and Jason Rusk were declared the men of the match.
