Man in car tries to grab child
Matamata police are seeking public assistance in identifying a man who allegedly tried to get a girl into his car as she walked to school on Friday.
Detective Steve Langdon of the Matamata- Piako CIB said the man, who was unknown to the girl, approached her near the corner of Short and Smith streets about 8am, demanding she get into his car.
‘‘He is described as having pale skin, a bushy beard and being 50 to 60 years of age with grey hair, some of which looked curly as it stuck out from under a black beanie he was wearing,’’ he said.
‘‘The man was also described as wearing a jumper and sweat pants and the car he was driving was described as a red, four-door sedan with possibly faded paint work.’’
Police have concerns for the behaviour displayed by the man and have contacted local schools to advise them of the incident.
‘‘We want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed Friday’s incident or who has information on the identity of the man.‘‘
You can contact Mr Langdon at the Matamata Police Station on 888 7117. Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
