Man in car tries to grab child

Mata­mata po­lice are seek­ing public as­sis­tance in iden­ti­fy­ing a man who al­legedly tried to get a girl into his car as she walked to school on Fri­day.

De­tec­tive Steve Lang­don of the Mata­mata- Pi­ako CIB said the man, who was un­known to the girl, ap­proached her near the corner of Short and Smith streets about 8am, de­mand­ing she get into his car.

‘‘He is de­scribed as hav­ing pale skin, a bushy beard and be­ing 50 to 60 years of age with grey hair, some of which looked curly as it stuck out from un­der a black beanie he was wear­ing,’’ he said.

‘‘The man was also de­scribed as wear­ing a jumper and sweat pants and the car he was driv­ing was de­scribed as a red, four-door sedan with pos­si­bly faded paint work.’’

Po­lice have con­cerns for the be­hav­iour dis­played by the man and have con­tacted lo­cal schools to ad­vise them of the in­ci­dent.

‘‘We want to hear from any­one who may have wit­nessed Fri­day’s in­ci­dent or who has in­for­ma­tion on the iden­tity of the man.‘‘
