‘‘There were 20 spots avail­able to peo­ple aged un­der 18 . . . but only one seat was avail­able on my par­tic­u­lar in­stru­ment.’’

With plans for the China tour al­ready in place, ef­forts to fundraise for this event are un­der way by Mata­mata Col­lege, in­clud­ing a mufti day.

Last year Jes­sica was in the Na­tional Sec­ondary Schools Brass Band, and a trip to Ti­maru this year for the Na­tional Brass Band Cham­pi­onships is wait­ing in the wings af­ter the tour.

‘‘Be­ing in­volved in the New Zealand Youth Brass Band will give me heaps of ex­pe­ri­ence for the fu­ture. I’m re­ally look­ing for­ward to the China tour,’’ she said.

‘‘I would like to say a huge thank you to Robin Jobe, my tu­tor, the Mata­mata Holy An­gels Church com­mu­nity, the Mata­mata Brass Friends of the Band, and of course the Mata­mata com­mu­nity for their on­go­ing sup­port.’’
