Police keen to find girl’s attacker
Matamata police are seeking assistance in identifying a man who allegedly attacked an 11-year-old girl as she walked to school on Wednesday, May 9.
Detective Chris Smith said the Matamata Intermediate student was assaulted on Sheffield St at 8.15am.
The girl managed to fight off her attacker and run to school where she told a friend what had happened.
She was not hurt in the attack but was ‘‘obviously shaken’’.
The man was described as wearing dark clothing, possibly with a hooded top.
Police do not believe it is linked to a previous incident on Friday, May 4, where a man tried to get a girl into his car. ‘‘But we do want to emphasise that kids should be walking to school along main roads, walking in pairs and not cutting through parks, reserves and alleys,’’ said Mr Smith.
There was no vehicle involved in the incident.
Police are reminding parents and children that they need to stay aware and keep safe.
