Fire victims homeless
Fire devastated a house on a Walton farm on Saturday leaving a young couple and their baby homeless.
Matamata firefighters were called to the blaze on Campbell Rd at 1.31pm, after a passer-by noticed smoke coming from the roof and rang 111.
Chief fire officer Kevin Curtis said the fire was already ‘‘ well involved’’ when they arrived.
‘‘It was quite serious, probably about 80 per cent of the house was destroyed.’’
Two fire trucks and two tankers, one from Morrinsville, attended the blaze, which took firefighters close to two hours to bring under control.
The young family had moved into the farm property for the June 1 change over just days before and were not home when it went up in flames, said Mr Curtis. Fire safety officers are investigating.
