Fond farewell to a very big pet

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By EVIE MARINKOVICH

Alan and Hilary Bland said goodbye to their 795 kilogram pet bull Simmy at the Matamata saleyard on Monday.

After being in the family for three years, Simmy sold for $1737 at $2.185 a kg.

Mr Bland said they usually sold their animals a lot smaller but because Simmy was a family pet they made sure he never went on the truck.

‘‘He’s grown so big that he started stepping over the fences and trying to run the farm but I quite like to run it myself so one of us had to go,’’ he said.

Thinking of Simmy’s future, Mr Bland said: ‘‘He could come on to your plate as a nice steak but he’s definitely not McDonald’s.’’
