Old pipes fail to cope in rain

-

The pipes under Te Poi Rd are nearly 50 years old and were unable to cope with the large amount of rain that saturated the Matamata area last week.

The resulting washout caused the culvert to cave in.

The road was closed, traffic was diverted, and work began on the repair.

Fulton Hogan caved in the remaining culvert and removed the old pipes to make room for the new.

On Thursday, August 2, Fulton Hogan began laying the new pipes.

Soil was compacted over the new pipes and the road was resurfaced.

The road was reopened on Saturday and is now a metal surface, but it is expected to be be sealed some time this week.
