Old pipes fail to cope in rain

The pipes un­der Te Poi Rd are nearly 50 years old and were un­able to cope with the large amount of rain that sat­u­rated the Mata­mata area last week.

The re­sult­ing washout caused the cul­vert to cave in.

The road was closed, traf­fic was di­verted, and work be­gan on the re­pair.

Ful­ton Ho­gan caved in the re­main­ing cul­vert and re­moved the old pipes to make room for the new.

On Thurs­day, Au­gust 2, Ful­ton Ho­gan be­gan lay­ing the new pipes.

Soil was com­pacted over the new pipes and the road was resur­faced.

The road was re­opened on Satur­day and is now a metal sur­face, but it is expected to be be sealed some time this week.
