Hockey players thrilled
Four Matamata Intermediate School hockey players will be sporting red, black and yellow on the turf this season.
Year 7 students Lauren Hawkins and Reuben Jones, and year 8 students Madison Tims and Emily De Klerk have been selected to represent Waikato.
Lauren and Emily will be playing for the Collier development team, Madison for the Collier A team and Reuben for the Hatch development team.
All four also play for the school’s A team and have been in Waikato representative teams before.
To make the selection, the players had to demonstrate their skills over two trials.
‘‘It takes a lot of practice to make it into a rep team,’’ said Lauren. ‘‘Hockey is quite a hard sport to play.’’ Madison said playing for Waikato was a good way to make new friends.
‘‘All my friends from my team last year are in my team again this year, so it’s pretty cool,’’ she said.
The players have already started training twice a week with their teams and are looking forward to playing in tournaments later in the season.
Last week, they were all staying up to watch the New Zealand hockey teams compete at the Olympics.
