Cyclists conquer the wet weather

Matamata Chronicle - - News -

The Winter Fun Rides lived up to their name in Matamata on Sunday, with torrential rain and wind proving a challenge.

About 300 cyclists braved the wayward weather to compete in the 50km and 80km events.

Nathan Cox of Dynamo Events said that despite the wet start, the ride was a huge success.

‘‘It went really well. Obviously the weather made it pretty challenging for everyone involved but overall it was a good day and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.’’

Most competitors came from Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland, with others travelling from as far as Whangarei.

Auckland’s Scott Ambrose won the 80km event, with Scott Creighton from Te Awamutu second and Matthew Markby from Whangarei third.

Spot prizes, including an Apple iPad, were awarded across the board and funds were raised for the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance.

Cambridge will host the second Winter Fun Rides event this weekend, with Hamilton to follow.
