Matamata Chronicle - - News -

A talent for language has seen Matamata College student Lydia Veltman receive top marks in an international English competition.

With the highest score for year 12 students in New Zealand, Lydia will be awarded a medal from the University of New South Wales.

Principal Glenn Rowsell said it was “astonishing” to have one of his students achieve such a high mark.

“We have had kids who have done really well before, but to have the top year 12 student in New Zealand is a bit mind blowing really.”

The multi-choice exam assessed language technique, interpretation, comprehension, vocabulary and language analysis.

With more than 450 New Zealand students entering, Lydia said it was a big achievement to take first place.

English was one of her best subjects and she was interested in studying language, linguistics, anthropology and psychology in the future.

Top score: Year 12 student Lydia Veltman received top marks in an international English competition.
