The Matamata Chronicle Facebook page is growing fast, last week reaching a massive 2800 likes.

Launched in 2008, the page is used to highlight stories, share photos and videos, and provide readers with a direct link to the newsroom.

Editor Katrina Lintonbon said Facebook has had a huge impact on the way the Chronicle interacts with the community.

‘‘It’s a great way of engaging with readers and giving them the opportunity to have their say,’’ she said.

It also allows the news team to keep readers up to date with events as they happen.

‘‘Being a weekly paper, sometimes things happen and we are unable to get them into the paper in time.

‘‘Now we are able to post things, for example road closures, straight away to let our readers know what is going on.’’

The Chronicle is continuing to tread new waters in the digital world and in October will go live with a website.

Along with a stronger presence on Twitter, this will allow the news team to report from the field.
