Shelford shares stories
Matamata Veterinary Services decided to “bring back Buck” by inviting former All Black captain Buck Shelford to speak at their client evening last week.
Shelford started his rugby career at Rotorua’s Western Heights High School. He remembers coming to play Matamata’s College first XV.
“We thought we played tough rugby in Bay of Plenty, then we came over here to Waikato and we were humbled big time,” he said.
Playing for Matamata was another future All Black, Murray Taylor.
“We lost that game but a year later in ’74, Matamata came to our school and I scored the winning points with a drop goal from halfway,” said Shelford.
Leading up to the event held at Matamata Golf Club on Thursday, Shelford visited some of the local pubs.
“I still drive through Matamata all the time, so it’s great to come back and actually spend a bit of time here,” he said.
