Mata­mata Ve­teri­nary Ser­vices de­cided to “bring back Buck” by invit­ing for­mer All Black cap­tain Buck Shelford to speak at their client evening last week.

Shelford started his rugby ca­reer at Ro­torua’s Western Heights High School. He re­mem­bers com­ing to play Mata­mata’s Col­lege first XV.

“We thought we played tough rugby in Bay of Plenty, then we came over here to Waikato and we were hum­bled big time,” he said.

Play­ing for Mata­mata was an­other fu­ture All Black, Mur­ray Tay­lor.

“We lost that game but a year later in ’74, Mata­mata came to our school and I scored the win­ning points with a drop goal from half­way,” said Shelford.

Lead­ing up to the event held at Mata­mata Golf Club on Thurs­day, Shelford vis­ited some of the lo­cal pubs.

“I still drive through Mata­mata all the time, so it’s great to come back and ac­tu­ally spend a bit of time here,” he said.
