New centre too costly

Matamata Chronicle - - News/opinion -

Our Matamata Piako District Council sports, recreation and community facilities we presently enjoy do not meet the costs of running and maintaining them.

To have an additional sports complex in Te Aroha, that, while it looks an excellent venue for sportsminded people, its major cost and ongoing costs, will be borne by the ratepayers.

Statistics have been stated that our average incomes are about $60,000 per annum.

Although there are high earners in our district, there are also those who are on fixed incomes who cannot meet further rate increases.

With our council’s projected rate increase of 4 per cent per annum, plus the proposed 3 per cent rate increase required for the Event Centre, it will far exceed central government‘s wishes for any increased rates to relate to inflation. We need to live within our means. Why not invite private enterprise to be involved?

While in large cities like Hamilton, Dunedin, and Auckland, recent major projects have left huge debt to pay, we don’t have the population to sustain such an expense.
