With summer fast approaching, the Matamata Swimming Club is starting its annual water safety lessons.

The Stanley Swim Safe Programme aims to teach children aged 5 to 13 how to swim and keep safe in the water.

Kevin Stanley, from sponsors Stanley Group, said basic water survival skills were essential for anyone living in New Zealand.

‘‘We are surrounded by water,’’ he said.

‘‘As a community, we need to step up and provide opportunities for young people to learn to swim.’’

Classes are taught twice a week and taken by fully qualified Swimming New Zealand instructors.

‘‘In terms of a community service that the swimming club is providing, we just think it’s fantastic,’’ Mr Stanley said.

According to Water Safety New Zealand, an average of 105 New Zealanders have drowned every year since 2006.

Mr Stanley said the programme only needed to save one life to make it worthwhile.
