Wills riding high in varsity volleyball
Matamata volleyball player Kelsie Wills has been named most outstanding player in a university championship game in the United States.
Wills is on a four-year volleyball scholarship at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York and her team recently won the All-Colonial Athletic Association championship.
‘‘We started out strongly in the season, and had a down patch through the middle, so it was really good to come back in time for the championship,’’ Wills said.
The talented outside hitter had a remarkable season, leading Hofstra with 513 kills, averaging 4.42 kills per set. She also has 248 digs to rank third on the team and chipped in with 64 blocks, 33 service aces and 22 assists.
Wills has won a number of other titles over the season - she was CAA player of the week three times, American Volleyball Coaches Association national player of the week, Collegiate Volleyball Update national player of the week, Hofstra Asics Invitational most valuable player and Hofstra student athlete of the week. She has also been named to the CAA first team.
‘‘I am looking forward to working on a few things during spring,’’ she said.
