Wills rid­ing high in var­sity vol­ley­ball

Mata­mata vol­ley­ball player Kelsie Wills has been named most out­stand­ing player in a univer­sity cham­pi­onship game in the United States.

Wills is on a four-year vol­ley­ball schol­ar­ship at Hof­s­tra Univer­sity in Long Is­land, New York and her team re­cently won the All-Colo­nial Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion cham­pi­onship.

‘‘We started out strongly in the sea­son, and had a down patch through the mid­dle, so it was really good to come back in time for the cham­pi­onship,’’ Wills said.

The tal­ented out­side hit­ter had a re­mark­able sea­son, lead­ing Hof­s­tra with 513 kills, av­er­ag­ing 4.42 kills per set. She also has 248 digs to rank third on the team and chipped in with 64 blocks, 33 ser­vice aces and 22 as­sists.

Wills has won a num­ber of other ti­tles over the sea­son - she was CAA player of the week three times, Amer­i­can Vol­ley­ball Coaches As­so­ci­a­tion na­tional player of the week, Col­le­giate Vol­ley­ball Up­date na­tional player of the week, Hof­s­tra Asics In­vi­ta­tional most valu­able player and Hof­s­tra stu­dent ath­lete of the week. She has also been named to the CAA first team.

‘‘I am look­ing for­ward to work­ing on a few things dur­ing spring,’’ she said.
