DairyNZ said farmers should put in place a summer management plan to help prepare earlier for periods of soil moisture deficits.
Having a well thoughtout plan sets out key decision points for stock and feed management, and dates for actions during any period of summer dry.
A plan should include tactics to monitor pasture and manage cattle body condition score. It should provide decision points for once-a-day milking or drying off, culling, and when to look at supplement needs; and should make use of advisers.
