Im­pres­sive field plays for awards

The Chiefs and Waikato/BoP Magic teams are two of the fi­nal­ists in the Team of the Year cat­e­gory at the Brian Perry Waikato Re­gional Sports Awards in Jan­uary 2013.

Fi­nal­ists were se­lected from District Sports Awards and Waikato Sec­ondary Schools Sports Awards win­ners.

The pres­ti­gious Brian Perry Waikato Re­gional Sports Awards cel­e­brates and ac­knowl­edges sport­ing achieve­ment in the greater Waikato re­gion.

The event show­cases achieve­ment from lo­cal club level through to high per­for­mance tri­umphs.

Sport Waikato Sport Devel­op­ment Ad­vi­sor Mark McLaugh­lin com­mented that the range of ath­letes from both elite and lo­cal have given the fi­nal­ists list a good mix of skills and achieve­ments.

‘‘There’s been a real high cal­i­bre of fi­nal­ists in all cat­e­gories this year. From in­di­vid­u­als and teams com­pet­ing lo­cally to in­ter­na­tional Olympic cham­pi­ons,’’ he said.

The Sports­man of the Year cat­e­gory has Chiefs’ Liam Mes­sam, Olympic rower Eric Mur­ray and Tri Sport’s Be­van Docherty as fi­nal­ists vy­ing for the award. Waikato BoP Magic cap­tain Laura Lang­man and Par­a­lympic hand cy­clist Sue Reid are among the Sportswoman of the Year fi­nal­ists.

Matthew Stan­ley is one of the fi­nal­ists in the Ju­nior Sport­man of the Year and Lewis McNabb will be vy­ing for the top prize in the Ref­eree of the Year cat­e­gory.

‘‘We’re very ex­cited to have Olympic gold medal­list and kiwi favourite Va­lerie Adams as our guest speaker to share her 2012 Olympic story. This truly is the pin­na­cle event on the Waikato sport­ing cal­en­dar,’’ Mr McLaugh­lin added.

Win­ners will be an­nounced on Thurs­day, Jan­uary 31, 2013 at Claude­lands Con­fer­ence and Ex­hi­bi­tion Cen­tre, Hamil­ton.
