Impressive field plays for awards
The Chiefs and Waikato/BoP Magic teams are two of the finalists in the Team of the Year category at the Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards in January 2013.
Finalists were selected from District Sports Awards and Waikato Secondary Schools Sports Awards winners.
The prestigious Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards celebrates and acknowledges sporting achievement in the greater Waikato region.
The event showcases achievement from local club level through to high performance triumphs.
Sport Waikato Sport Development Advisor Mark McLaughlin commented that the range of athletes from both elite and local have given the finalists list a good mix of skills and achievements.
‘‘There’s been a real high calibre of finalists in all categories this year. From individuals and teams competing locally to international Olympic champions,’’ he said.
The Sportsman of the Year category has Chiefs’ Liam Messam, Olympic rower Eric Murray and Tri Sport’s Bevan Docherty as finalists vying for the award. Waikato BoP Magic captain Laura Langman and Paralympic hand cyclist Sue Reid are among the Sportswoman of the Year finalists.
Matthew Stanley is one of the finalists in the Junior Sportman of the Year and Lewis McNabb will be vying for the top prize in the Referee of the Year category.
‘‘We’re very excited to have Olympic gold medallist and kiwi favourite Valerie Adams as our guest speaker to share her 2012 Olympic story. This truly is the pinnacle event on the Waikato sporting calendar,’’ Mr McLaughlin added.
Winners will be announced on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre, Hamilton.
