Clean sweep for dux
The announcement of this year’s dux of the school came as little surprise to staff and students at Matamata College.
Seventeen-year-old Jessica Watkinson made it a clean five-year sweep, previously being year 11 and 12 dux and top student in years 9 and 10.
‘‘I was happy and a little suppose,’’ said Jessica.
‘‘I have been top of my year the last four years but this was the one I really wanted.’’
Jessica was this year top of the class in all five of her subjects: Economics, accounting, geography, statistics, and calculus.
As well as dux, the dedicated student was awarded a University of Auckland Jubilee Scholarship worth $6000 at the senior prizegiving on December 6.
She plans to study for a Bachelor of Commerce at the university, and is considering a double major in accounting and management.
‘‘I’m very determined and very competitive,’’ she said.
‘‘I have very high self-motivation and determination to do well, and if I’m going to do something, I will always do it to the best of my abilities.’’
Outside of academics, Jessica was this year involved in Students Against Drink Driving and the Wellness Committee and also ran a blood drive at the school.
I ‘‘This year’s been really cool. ‘‘There’s been heaps of opportunities. You just have to take up whatever you can.’’
Along with head girl Riannan Bardoul, Jessica went to St Joseph’s Catholic School and Matamata Intermediate.
Making time to study and putting the effort in over the entire year was vital to achieving with excellence, she said.
Having the support of her teachers was also important and Jessica was grateful for all the help she had this year.
‘‘If you are willing to put in the effort, they are more than willing to help you.
‘‘If I ever had questions, I was always comfortable to ask or run things by them.’’
In particular, she would like to thank Estelle Claassen for driving her passion for accounting; Paul Marshall for stepping in to tutor her in calculus when she had a timetable clash; year 13 dean Andrew Kilham; departing principal Glenn Rowsell; and her parents, boyfriend, and friends for all their support.
