Swimmingly good at world champs
Matamata swimmer Matthew Stanley finished sixth in his first world championship final in Turkey on December 13.
The 20- year- old clocked 1:44.55 in the 200m freestyle, won by Olympic and world champion Ryan Lochte of the Unites States, on the opening night of the short course championships at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul.
Stanley was fourth fastest in qualifying with a personal best 1:44.13 in the morning heat.
London Olympian Stanley was the only New Zealand swimmer to qualify for the finals on the first day, breaking the 1:45 barrier for the first time, then repeating it.
His previous best was 1:45.02 set at a world cup leg in Singapore recently.
