Great 2012 moments to celebrate

Matamata Chronicle - - News - By NANAIA MAHUTA

Meri Kirihimete me nga mihi mo te Tau Hou – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Matamata.

The coming of the new year often gives pause for reflection on the past year and hope for a successful year in 2013.

It may feel like this year has been one of doom and gloom but there have been some inspirational moments for Kiwis to celebrate.

In your own backyard the wonders of New Zealand’s flourishing movie industry has been hard at work on The Hobbit.

This has certainly shone a light on Matamata and the community has proven that through hard work and creative thinking, smalltown New Zealand can hold its head up high on a world stage.

Congratulations on the opening of the Matamata i-SITE Gatehouse which is a great jumping off point for Hobbit fans.

It’s this No 8 wire mentality that sometimes gives Kiwis the edge over our better- resourced counterparts and it is this ability to think outside the square – if given the chance – that will see our country come out of the economic doldrums.

We have the brains and the work ethic and Labour intends to rev up our innovation engine through research and development tax credits, increased direct investment, and better linking research institutes, universities and businesses together.

This is something the Waikato region with its wealth of natural resource, cutting-edge university and polytechnic and groundbreaking businesses will stand to benefit from.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe, refreshing and enjoyable holiday season and I hope 2013 brings continued success to Matamata.
